DESCRIPTION
Pair of frames; Fernando VI; c. 1750.
Carved and polychrome wood.
Measurements: 66 x 45 cm; 58 x 37,5 cm.
Pair of frames belonging to the period of Fernando VI, made around 1750 in carved and polychrome wood, representative of the Spanish decorative taste of transition between the late baroque and the first rococo formulations. Although relatively sober in execution compared to the exuberant courtly models of the time, these pieces stand out for the balanced elegance of their ornamentation and the quality of the craftsmanship of their carving.the structure presents a molded profile of smooth and proportionate lines, enriched by a discreetly present gilded decoration, organized by plant motifs located in the corners and in the central areas of each side. This ornamental scheme responds to a widespread typology in mid-18th century Spain, where decoration began to abandon the sculptural density of full baroque to adopt a lighter, more elegant and dynamic language. The stylized leaves are harmoniously integrated into the surface of the frame, creating delicate decorative accents that visually animate the piece without breaking its structural sobriety.
In the mid-18th century, elements inherited from the late Baroque, visible in the taste for vegetal carving and the richness of the gilding, still coexist with a progressive formal simplification that anticipates Rococo and, later, Neoclassical sensibilities. The ornamental motifs progressively abandon architectural heaviness and acquire a greater linear fluidity, seeking effects of grace and lightness more in keeping with the new courtly taste promoted by the Bourbon dynasty.
