BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Processional or altar cross. Europe, XII-XIII centuries.
Bronze.
Mounted on a later wooden base.
It presents good general state of preservation, with patina, small faults and alterations typical of its age.
Measurements: 48 x 31 x 8 cm.

Medieval bronze cross, for liturgical use, conceived as a processional or altar cross. The piece presents straight arms with widened ends and cut profile, Punctures of fixation and applied decoration, usual features in this type of medieval crosses destined to devotional and ceremonial contexts.

In the center is the figure of the crucified Christ, worked in relief, with the frontal body, arms outstretched and the cloth of purity around the waist. The schematic anatomy, the hieratic composition and the contained expressiveness of the face respond to the late Romanesque language, in which the image of Christ still retains a solemn and symbolic character, more theological than narrative.

The Punctures visible on the arms and shaft indicate that the piece may have been originally enriched with appliqués, enamels, decorative plaques or fixing elements, now lost, as was common in medieval liturgical crosses.

The current mounting on a wooden base allows its presentation as an autonomous piece, although it should be understood as a later adaptation for its conservation and exhibition.

It is a piece of remarkable historical and devotional interest, representative of medieval sacred metalwork and of the fundamental role that the cross played in the liturgy and in the Christian visual culture of the central centuries of the Middle Ages.
