A round mirror inspired by the Empire style, made during the first quarter of the 20th century and designed as both an ornamental and functional piece. Its characteristic convex surface, known as a “witch’s eye” or “fish-eye,” produces a distinctive distortion of the image and allows for a wider field of view.The frame, crafted from carved and gilded wood, features rich historicist ornamentation. Of particular note is the eagle crowning the composition, a motif closely linked to imperial iconography and the Napoleonic decorative tradition. The top section is completed with plant motifs and classically inspired ornamental forms, while the lower section incorporates symmetrical decoration that brings balance to the whole.
Convex mirrors enjoyed particular popularity in Europe beginning in the 18th century and were later revived by historicist styles, both for their optical appeal and their decorative character.
