The significance of this box, now up for auction, lies both in its age and in the exceptional richness of its craftsmanship; it stands as a remarkable example of the “Jolités de Spa,” one of the most distinctive artisanal traditions associated with Spa’s development as a major European spa town. The development of this craft was closely linked to the city’s rise as a European spa center: visitors who came drawn by the medicinal properties of its waters would purchase small decorated wooden objects as souvenirs—initially walking sticks and personal items—which were soon joined by boxes and chests of increasing ornamental richness. During the reign of Louis XIV, these crafts reached a high level of sophistication, incorporating decorative motifs associated with French courtly taste and models popularized by ornamental artists such as Charles Le Brun and Jean Bérain.

This particular piece stands out for the richness and meticulousness of its decoration, created using natural and dyed mother-of-pearl inlays that are hallmarks of the warm tone of the wood. The lid is organized around a large central medallion, dominated by an architectural landscape featuring a house and surrounded by six hunting scenes in which dogs chase rabbits, a fox, and deer. This narrative core is encircled by an exuberant floral wreath composed of tulips, peonies, daffodils, acanthus leaves, and other plants, rendered in mother-of-pearl of various shades. Amid the vegetation, birds can also be seen pecking at clusters of grapes, along with butterflies and bees—small details that highlight the virtuosity of the artisans of Spa and lend great liveliness to the composition.

The profuse ornamentation extends along the edges and front of the box through scrollwork, flowers, and plant motifs, creating a virtually continuous decorative surface characteristic of the sumptuous Baroque style. The four large mother-of-pearl discs located at the corners of the lid enhance the interplay of reflections and materials, while the metal clasp completes the object’s precious character. Due to its age, technical complexity, iconographic richness, and remarkable abundance of mother-of-pearl, this piece is an outstanding example of 17th-century “Jolités de Spa”—objects conceived not only for practical purposes but also as true luxury items and souvenirs, intended for a wealthy European clientele who frequented the famous spa town.
