DESCRIPTION
Lantaka: Philippines; 18th century.
Bronze and acrylic pedestal.
Measurements: 32 x 18 x 6 cm.
A Philippine lantaka made of cast bronze, belonging to a type of muzzle-loading light artillery widely used in the maritime and commercial spheres of Southeast Asia since modern times. Small in size and designed to be easily maneuverable, lantakas were particularly prevalent in the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Malay Archipelago, where they were used on both ships and in defensive structures.
The piece features a cylindrical, faceted body, formed by a series of planes that give the cannon a distinctly ornamental appearance in addition to its functional purpose. Lantakas played a particularly significant role in navigation and trade across the Philippine archipelago. They could be mounted on light vessels, where they served as deck guns, as well as in defensive positions and fortifications. Their widespread use along the maritime routes of Southeast Asia also reflects the intense exchange of metallurgical techniques, weapon designs, and decorative styles among the region’s various cultures.
