DESCRIPTION
Pair of elephant bookends. France, ca. 1930. Art Deco.
Silver-plated metal on rectangular bases of Rouge Royal marble.
They show patina and slight signs of wear consistent with their age. One of the bases has a small chip in one corner.
Measurements: 13 x 11 x 6.5 cm, each.
Pair of bookends depicting seated elephants, rendered using the synthetic modeling and rounded volumes characteristic of Art Deco decorative sculpture. The simplified anatomy and slightly humorous character of the figures are hallmarks of the bold geometry of the Rouge Royal marble bases, reinforcing the balance between figuration and design. This type of small animal sculpture was widely prevalent in French decorative arts during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in functional objects designed for desks and home interiors.
