DESCRIPTION

WMF – WÜRTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK. Germany, ca. 1905–1906.
“Echo” vanity mirror, model no. 131.
Silver-plated Britannia metal, beveled mirror, and wooden back.
Marked WMF, “B,” “I/O,” and “OX.” Numbered “131.”
Retains the original back support.
In good overall condition, with small localized losses of the silver plating, subtle signs of aging on the mirror, and slight wear on the back, consistent with its age.
Measurements: 37 x 28 cm; approx. 30 cm deep with the stand open.

Model No. 131 is one of the most characteristic figurative mirrors from WMF’s Jugendstil production and is documented in the manufacturer’s 1906 catalog. The asymmetrical composition features a female figure in a long dress, leaning toward the mirror beneath a latticework of flowers and stems; the dress itself extends along the lower edge until it blends into the frame. This fusion of figure—inspired by the nymph Echo—floral ornamentation, and functional structure fully embodies the organic language of Central European Art Nouveau.

The preserved markings confirm, in addition to the signature, that the piece is crafted from silver-plated Britannia metal marked “B” with an oxidized finish “OX,” designed to accentuate the reliefs and hallmarks of the surface. Founded in Geislingen in 1853, WMF became one of Germany’s leading manufacturers of metal household and decorative objects in the early 20th century. Its Jugendstil creations stand out for bringing a remarkable sculptural richness to mass production, particularly evident in mirrors and dressing table objects such as this one, where the relief, sinuous lines, and floral motifs are integrated into a unified design concept.
