Charles William Sharpe was an important British engraver known for engraving works by renowned contemporary artists. He specialized in portraits (such as the portrait of J.M.W. Turner, engraved from a work of art). Turner, engraved from a work by Alfred, Count D'Orsay) or historical scenes (such as "The Death of Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar", based on a painting by Daniel Maclise). He also worked for publications such as "The Art Journal" and with publishers such as Gebbie & Barrie. He reproduced works by painters such as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (for example, "Pastime in Ancient Egypt") and William Powell Frith ("Life at the Seaside, Ramsgate").
