Sandra Gamarra Heshiki is a Peruvian artist based in Spain whose multidisciplinary practice critically examines contemporary art systems and the persistence of the colonial legacy. Her production, which integrates painting, installation, video, sculpture and writing, is articulated through appropriation strategies and archival procedures, aimed at problematizing the construction of individual and collective memory.
Trained at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and with a PhD from the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Gamarra has developed projects that investigate the circulation of images and the institutional mechanisms that determine their reading. The creation of LiMac, an itinerant museum conceived to offer a critical vision of Lima's artistic ecosystem through the re-reading and re-contextualization of works and documents, is part of this line.
He has represented Peru and Spain in various editions of the Venice Biennale, as well as participating in other international events. Her work has repeatedly addressed the tensions between coloniality, otherness and symbolic violence, an issue that has guided recent exhibitions dedicated to reconsidering the hegemonic narratives of art. In her statements, the artist has emphasized the reflexive dimension of her practice, understood as a constant dialogue between her own imaginary and the foreign images she incorporates.
Recognized with the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts in 2024, Gamarra's work is in the collections of institutions such as MoMA, Tate Gallery, Museu de Arte do Rio, MACBA, Museo Patio Herreriano, MUSAC, MALI and several private collections.
