Michel-Ange Slodtz (Paris, 1705-1764) was an outstanding French sculptor of the 18th century, trained at the Académie Royale and deeply influenced by his long stay in Rome, where he assimilated the late Baroque and the Italian sculptural dynamism. His work combines French elegance with dramatic expressiveness, being especially valued in funerary and religious sculptures.
Slodtz also had a relationship with engraving, as some of his compositions were reproduced in prints, which allowed his style to spread beyond the sculptural sphere. He also collaborated in projects for Versailles, participating in the decoration of official spaces, which consolidated his prestige as a sculptor at the service of the court and French artistic institutions.
