Known as César, Baldaccini was primarily a sculptor, although he also tackled other fields such as painting, drawing, engraving, photography, ceramics and even industrial design. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille (1935-1939), and later at the School of Fine Arts in Paris (1943-1948). In 1952 he began to create sculptures by welding metal scraps. Already in his early years he will be recognized for his sculptures of insects, other animals and nudes. In 1954 he held his first solo exhibition at the Lucien Durand Gallery in Paris. He is currently represented in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Marseille, the Tate Gallery in London, the Sao Paulo Museum of Art, Harvard University, the National Galleries of Scotland and Australia and other prominent collections, both public and private.
