Poster realized on the occasion of the exhibition Mostra di Picasso held at the Palazzo Reale in Milan in 1953. The image presents a powerful figure of faun executed by means of ample black brushstrokes of great gestural load, that configure the face and the anatomy of the personage with a radical and expressive economy of means.
The composition fully responds to Picasso's late language, where the spontaneous stroke and formal simplification become vehicles of intense psychological expressiveness. The faun, a recurring figure in his iconography, refers to the mythical and Dionysian world, symbol of vitality, sensuality and creative freedom, central elements in the artist's work during this period.
The contrast between the dominant black of the figure and the light background reinforces the monumental character of the image, while the handwritten typography of Picasso's name underlines the self-referential dimension and the iconic status of the artist in the international exhibition context of the post-war period.
This poster is an outstanding example of Picasso's graphic production linked to large institutional exhibitions, highly appreciated for its visual strength, its monumental scale and its fidelity to the artist's plastic language.
Pablo Picasso is one of the fundamental figures of 20th century art and creator, together with Georges Braque, of Cubism. His work is preserved in the Musée Picasso and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. In the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) of New York. At the Tate Modern in London. And at the Art Institute of Chicago, among many other international institutions.
