After ANDY WARHOL (Pittsburgh, 1928 - New York, 1987).
"Marilyn Monroe Exposition," 1971, Tate Gallery.
Silkscreen.
In very good condition.
Measurements: 76 x 51 cm.
Poster realized on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Andy Warhol at the Tate Gallery (London), held between February 17 and March 28, 1971, one of the first major institutional retrospectives of the artist in Europe.
The image reproduces the famous portrait of Marilyn Monroe, based on the promotional photograph for the film Niagara (1953), which Warhol turned into one of the most recognizable icons of 20th century art. The use of flat and hallmarks colors, together with the frontality of the face and the serial repetition, reinforces the condition of the actress as a symbol of mass culture and the Hollywood star system.
This poster is part of the museum dissemination of pop language, transferring to the institutional sphere an image originally associated with mechanical reproduction and visual consumption. The work combines its historical-documentary value as exhibition material with the strong aesthetic impact characteristic of Warholian iconography.
Warhol's historical exhibition posters, especially those linked to institutions such as the Tate Gallery, are highly prized by collectors of graphic works and museum memorabilia of contemporary art.
