DESCRIPTION
ABEL BARROSO (Pinar del Río, Cuba, 1971).
Untitled. 1999.
Engraving, copy 147/300.
Belongs to the folder for the exhibition "La huella múltiple", Havana, 1999.
Signed and justified in pencil.
Measurements: 21 x 25.5 cm.
In this engraving, Barroso resorts to a graphic language of strong expressionist imprint, close to traditional woodcut, to represent a collective scene of marked narrative tension. The schematized figures, constructed by means of hallmarks of black and white and an incisive line, evoke an atmosphere of confrontation or public trial.
This piece, conceived in the context of La huella múltiple, reflects his interest in the mechanisms of power, collective representation and social memory in fin-de-siècle Cuba.
Abel Barroso is a key figure in the renewal of Cuban printmaking for his ability to transform woodcuts into three-dimensional objects. His work explores identity, borders and human transience through labyrinths and walls, highlighting his individual participation in galleries in Tokyo, Madrid and France. Member of the Cuban Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennial, his career includes international fairs such as ARCO and Art Miami. His presence in world-renowned institutions is consolidated in collections such as the MoMA, the Whitney Museum, the British Museum, the Minneapolis Art Museum and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba.
