These images represent Ricky Powell's work as an intimate visual archive of New York's urban culture of the 1980s and 1990s, where, through organized and hand-annotated slides, he spontaneously and authentically documents the hip-hop scene, daily life, concerts and portraits of a diverse creative community, functioning more as a close-up chronicler than a formal photographer, while conveying memory, identity and nostalgia of a pivotal era.
Ricky Powell, a photographer specializing in environmental portraiture, rose to fame due to his relationship with the Beastie Boys. His photographs have appeared in The New York Times, The New York Post, Daily News, The Village Voice, TIME, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, Rolling Stone and many other publications.
