DESCRIPTION
JAUME PLENSA (Barcelona, 1955).
"Cabeza negra", 1987.
Aquatint and carborundum on paper, copy 12/75.
Signed and justified by hand.
Measurements: 48 x 40 cm (plate); 75 x 89 cm (paper); 89 x 104 cm (frame).
Made in 1987, this work belongs to a period in which Plensa explored the human figure as a container of energy, language and memory. Before his famous large-format public sculptures, the artist developed an intense graphic work in which central themes of his career already appear: the head as a symbolic territory, identity, silence and the tension between matter and spirit.
The combined technique of aquatint and carborundum allows for tactile densities and surfaces of great material richness, reinforcing the physical presence of the image.
Jaume Plensa studied at the Llotja School and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He lives in Paris and has developed an extensive international career, with outstanding exhibitions such as the retrospective held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2000.
He has received important recognitions, among them the National Prize of Plastic Arts of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Medal of Knight of Arts and Letters of the French Ministry of Culture. His work is part of important international collections and museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and the MACBA in Barcelona.
