DESCRIPTION
EDUARDO CHILLIDA (San Sebastian, 1924 - 2002).
"Barcelona II".1973.
Lithograph on paper, copy 17/100.
Signed and numbered in pencil.
Measurements: 66 x 50 cm.
Chillida transferred to the graphic work the same structural principles that articulate his sculpture. In this lithograph, the composition is organized by means of powerful black forms, rotund and compact, which seem to intertwine in an almost architectural construction.
The masses, with irregular and slightly organic contours, generate a dynamic dialogue between full and empty. The white space does not act as a simple background, but as an active element that balances and tensions the composition. This relationship between matter and space, between weight and suspension, is a constant in Chillida's plastic thought.
Throughout his life, Chillida received numerous awards, including the Carnegie Prize, the Rembrandt Prize, the Wolf Foundation of the Arts and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. He was an academician of San Fernando, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorary of the Royal Academy of Arts of London and of the Imperial Order of Japan.
In addition to his Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani, he is represented in museums and collections around the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the MOMA in New York, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London or the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
