"Los Incas peludos del atardecer" (plate 68) is one of the prints that Salvador Dalí made as a reinterpretation of the famous series Los Caprichos by Francisco de Goya. In this project, Dalí does not limit himself to copying the original compositions, but intervenes and resignifies them from his surrealist imaginary.
In "The Hairy Incas at Sunset", the artist introduces dreamlike elements and formal transformations that destabilize the original scene, incorporating hybrid figures and unexpected textures. The addition of the "hairy" and the twilight atmosphere generate a sense of strangeness and ambiguity, characteristic of Dalí's language.
While Goya used Los Caprichos as a social and moral critique of his time, Dalí shifts the emphasis to the subconscious and the fantastic, creating a work that dialogues with the past but asserts a fully surrealist identity.
