This work synthesizes Hartung's research on automatism and the expressiveness of the stroke, consolidating him as one of the fundamental figures of post-war European abstraction.
Hans Hartung was one of the most outstanding figures of lyrical abstraction. Trained in Germany, he settled in France, where he developed most of his career.
His work is characterized by the prominence of gesture and line, exploring the expressive possibilities of the line in compositions of great intensity. Throughout his career he has gained wide international recognition.
He is currently represented at the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, the Tate Gallery in London and the Haifa Museum in Israel, among many other centers, institutions and collections around the world.
