Juan de Mariana (was a Spanish Jesuit, theologian and historian. He was part of the Society of Jesus during the Golden Age and is considered one of the representatives of the second scholasticism together with Baltasar Gracián, Pedro de Ribadeneyra, Juan Eusebio Nieremberg and Francisco Suárez. He studied Arts and Theology in Alcalá de Henares. At the age of seventeen he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus and later completed his priestly formation in Rome. He taught in various Italian cities and at the Sorbonne in Paris. He returned to Spain in 1574 and settled in Toledo, dedicating himself to teaching and writing his works.
Among his works are the Historia general de España (1601) and the Escolios al Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento, based on the Vulgate. His work De rege et regis institutione (1599) dealt with the limits of the king's power and the education of the Christian prince, addressing topics such as the prudence of the monarch, the relationship between society and political power, and the doctrine of tyrannicide. He died in Toledo at the age of 87, while working on his writings, leaving a legacy of historiography, theology and political reflection that was consulted during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and whose name was later associated with the figure of Marianne during the French Revolution.
