DESCRIPTION

Poster of the V Centenary of the death of St. Vincent Ferrer.
Lithograph printed on paper.
Printing Daughters of St. Paul.
Measurements: 75 x 48 cm, 83.5 x 64 cm (frame).

Poster realized on the occasion of the V Centenary of the death of San Vicente Ferrer celebrated in Valencia in 1919. The composition shows the Dominican saint in a central position, surrounded by allegorical female figures, ornamental motifs and decorative elements of modernist and regionalist inspiration. The abundant floral decoration, the use of sinuous lines and the intense polychromy place the work within the Valencian graphic aesthetics of the early 20th century.

The work is part of the important development of Valencian poster design during the first decades of the 20th century, a period in which Valencia became one of the main Spanish centers of graphic arts and lithography. The influence of modernism, symbolism and European Art Nouveau favored the appearance of posters of great ornamental richness for exhibitions, popular festivals, religious events and civic celebrations.

The figure of San Vicente Ferrer had an enormous relevance in the Valencian cultural and religious identity, especially during the celebrations of the fifth centenary of his death. In 1919, large religious events, processions, competitions and public festivities were organized in Valencia, reflecting the strong popular rootedness of the saint in Valencian society.

The poster combines religious tradition and modern graphic language, a very common feature of Valencian poster design of the period. The composition presents a clear modernist decorative influence in the floral frames, the stylized typography and the ornamental balance of the whole, while the frontal representation of the saint maintains a strong devotional and commemorative function.
