Francisco Amighetti Ruiz was a Costa Rican painter, engraver and writer, considered one of the most influential figures of Costa Rican art in the 20th century. His work, consisting of more than 500 pieces, portrays the life, culture and society of Costa Rica. He excelled especially in woodcut and chromoxylography, techniques with which he addressed themes such as death, old age and daily life from an expressionist and ironic vision. His engravings, influenced by Japanese art and German expressionism, marked the development of a national school of woodcut in Costa Rica. In 1970 he received the Magón National Culture Award and in 2010 he was declared Benemérito de la Patria.
