"Yellow Mimosa, July 23, 2015" transforms a plant motif into a graphic composition, intense and monumental, fully characteristic of Donald Sultan's language. The work depicts mimosa branches suspended on the white background, where yellow clusters are distributed as points of intense chromatic vibration among green leaves, black strokes and bluish accents.
The piece reveals one of Sultan's essential traits: the tension between organic form and abstract construction. Although the motif comes from the plant world, the image is articulated through rhythms, repetitions and hallmarks that bring it closer to abstraction. The dark, almost calligraphic stems descend over the surface while the yellow flowers act as luminous signs, balancing fragility and visual presence.
"Yellow Mimosa, July 23, 2015" is a notable example of Sultan's recent graphic work, in which nature becomes structure, sign and pictorial presence.
Donald Sultan is one of the foremost American artists of his generation. His work is characterized by a combination of recognizable images, strong graphic sense and a remarkable exploration of materials and technical processes. He has developed a wide production in painting, drawing, sculpture and graphic work, with recurring motifs such as flowers, lemons, poppies, mimosas and everyday objects treated with monumentality. His work is represented in institutions such as MoMA in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
