BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

DICK BRUNA (Utrecht, 1927–2017).
“Cherry”.
Silkscreen on paper. Edition 7/50.
Signed and dated in pencil.
Measurements: 56 x 75.5 cm.
The apparent simplicity of Cherry stems from a profound reflection on graphic design and illustration. Influenced by the European avant-garde, particularly by the formal synthesis of modern art and postwar Dutch design, Bruna developed a style based on the purity of forms and direct, universal visual communication. His work moves away from naturalism to focus on the essence, where every line and every color serves a precise function.
Although Dick Bruna is known primarily for his children’s books, his body of work also included posters, book covers, and numerous standalone illustrations that share the same formal rigor. In all of them, one perceives a desire to make the image accessible without sacrificing artistic quality. This combination of simplicity, balance, and visual effectiveness made his work a benchmark of contemporary graphic design. The son of a prominent publisher, Bruna worked for years in book and cover design, in addition to translating works into Dutch. Although his family expected him to take over the publishing business, he turned to design and artistic creation, eventually producing thousands of book covers.
His style was influenced by artists such as Henri Matisse and the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, particularly by formal simplification and the use of collage. He also designed covers for Georges Simenon’s Maigret detective novels, which are widely recognized for their visual impact.
