In “Cynthia Nude” (1981), Tom Wesselmann revisits one of the central themes of his career: the female nude transformed into a visually striking image through the codes of Pop Art. The work features Cynthia, one of his recurring models, through a close-up framing and a carefully structured composition in which the female body, elements of the domestic setting, and everyday objects take on a new formal dimension. The figure appears integrated into a space with a distinctly theatrical character, where the profile of the face, the sensuality of the nude, and the interior elements—such as the vase of red tulips and the lamp in shades of pink—are organized within a single visual plane dominated by graphic synthesis. The use of flat colors, intense chromatic hallmarks, and fluid contours reveals the influence of advertising, design, and contemporary visual culture, while establishing a direct dialogue with the historical tradition of the Western nude. Cynthia Nude thus exemplifies Wesselmann’s ability to reinterpret the nude from a contemporary perspective, fusing sensuality, design, and a rigorous visual refinement that defines one of the most recognizable languages of 20th-century art.

Graphic work occupies a central place in Wesselmann’s career. Through silkscreen printing, the artist explored the possibilities of pure color, the repetition of forms, and the precision of color registration, developing a language of his own in which the image is reduced to its essential elements without losing its expressive power. His graphic works expand and enrich the concepts present in his paintings and sculptures, becoming an autonomous strand within his artistic body of work.

Tom Wesselmann was an American Pop Art painter. He was one of the last great masters of American Pop Art, widely known for his bold and striking female nudes. He enrolled in a psychology program in 1951, but the following year he was drafted to serve in the Korean War. However, he was ultimately stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas. There, he created comic strips about military life and later diversified his subject matter.2 He left the Army in 1954, resumed his psychology studies, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1956. It was then that he moved to New York to devote himself to comics. He studied at the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture until 1959. His early attempts at painting, influenced by Willem de Kooning, were rooted in the Abstract Expressionism that was then in vogue. In 1959, he created his first abstract collages, but he soon became interested in the figurative work of Matisse, Van Gogh, and Modigliani, and the following year he painted his first figurative works, including landscapes. His first solo exhibition, at the Tanager Gallery in New York, took place in 1961. That same year, he began his extensive series *Great American Nudes*. The early works were small-scale collages, but the later ones were executed in oil (from the Latin *oleum*, meaning “oil”) and acrylics on large canvases. In some of them, he incorporated real objects. A canvas from that series, *Nude No. 1* (1970), hangs in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. Later, he produced series featuring smokers, as well as enormous still lifes with everyday objects such as appliances, bottles, and ice cream. He experimented with sculpture using cut-out metal sheets. His body of graphic work is extensive and encompasses various techniques (lithography, silkscreen, aquatint). A major retrospective was dedicated to him in Japan in 1993–94. In 1980, he wrote an autobiography that he signed under the pseudonym Slim Stealingworth.
