DESCRIPTION
JOSEP MARIA SUBIRACHS (Barcelona, 1927–2014).
“Three Angles,” 1972.
Etching on paper, H.C. edition.
Signed and dated in pencil.
Measurements: 100 x 76 cm; 107 x 82.5 cm (frame).
“Three Angles” was created during a particularly significant period in Subirachs’s neo-figurative phase, when human anatomy, geometry, and eroticism were integrated into a single symbolic system. The female profile and torso are reduced to essential lines, while three triangles transform the body’s proportions into a sort of mathematical formula.
Graphic art played an increasingly important role in Subirachs’ career from 1970 onward, primarily through etching and lithography. In these works, he transposed much of his sculptural universe onto a two-dimensional plane, maintaining the precision of draftsmanship that characterizes this period. Espai Subirachs
Josep Maria Subirachs was a key figure in the postwar Catalan avant-garde, with a career that evolved from expressionism to abstraction and later to neo-figuration. In addition to his extensive body of sculptural work, he consistently pursued drawing and printmaking; he participated in the 1963 São Paulo Biennial and the 1968 Venice Biennale, and gained particular public recognition for his work on the Passion Facade of the Sagrada Família.
