The work reflects the experimental approach that made David de Almeida a leading figure in contemporary Portuguese printmaking. His focus on the tactile qualities of the print was a constant throughout his career, leading him to develop his own techniques using materials such as stone paste and expanded clay.
Trained at the Escola Artística António Arroio and the Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses, David de Almeida furthered his studies at Atelier 17 in Paris with Stanley Hayter and was a fellow of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Foundation itself dedicated solo exhibitions to him in 1981 and 1986, and currently holds works by him in the collection of the Centro de Arte Moderna. In 1997, he was named Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
