Under the artistic name The Connor Brothers, British artists Mike Snelle and James Golding create work that combines images drawn from popular culture with texts rich in irony, humor, and double meanings. Their unique visual universe often draws on old covers of popular novels and vintage publications, which the artists transform by incorporating new texts, colors, and graphic elements. In “I’ve Had the Sort of Day,” the appropriation of a retro-style editorial image gives rise to a new narrative. The intervention—using silkscreen printing and paint—introduces a manual and object-based dimension that distinguishes each piece
Early in their careers, Snelle and Golding deliberately constructed a fictional biography in which they were twin brothers who had escaped from a Californian cult to devote themselves to art. This story was part of their own artistic strategy and their reflection on the construction of narratives and identity, before both artists gradually abandoned this fiction.Their work, recognizable for its combination of vintage aesthetics, biting humor, and references to 20th-century visual culture, has achieved widespread international recognition, with exhibitions in cities such as London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, and Sydney. Their work is included in major international public and private collections, including that of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, as well as the Omer Koç and Niarchos collections, solidifying their presence in leading contemporary art institutions and collections. His international career has also been bolstered by a strong presence in the art market and in exhibitions held in cities such as London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, and Sydney.
