BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MAN RAY (Philadelphia, 1890 – Paris, 1976).
“Rebus,” 1972.
Color etching and aquatint on paper, print no. 57/100.
Signed and numbered in pencil.
Measurements: 66 x 50 cm.

Created in 1972, “Rebus” belongs to Man Ray’s mature body of print work, a period in which he revisited visual techniques developed during his Dadaist and Surrealist years: unexpected associations, shifts in scale, and decontextualized objects that transform the image into a space open to multiple interpretations. The title itself refers to a hieroglyph or visual riddle, an idea particularly aligned with his interest in challenging the conventional reading of images.

Against the pink background, a large biomorphic structure, a hand, a circular motif with solar connotations, and a schematic urban landscape are combined. The coexistence of recognizable elements and forms that are difficult to identify creates a deliberately enigmatic scene, where objects lose their usual function to take on new poetic possibilities.

The technique reinforces this tension between precision and strangeness: the etching defines profiles and linear patterns, while the aquatint introduces uniform tonal fields and the characteristic colored background. This combination is particularly fitting for an artist who, for decades, explored the possibilities of photography, printmaking, and experimental techniques.

Man Ray was one of the key figures of Dadaism and Surrealism and one of the great innovators of 20th-century visual art. After settling in Paris in 1921, he developed an experimental practice that spanned painting, photography, film, objects, and printmaking, achieving particular recognition for his rayographs. His work is widely represented in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
