BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JORGE CASTILLO (Pontevedra, 1933).
Untitled, 2010.
Hand-colored lithograph on paper, print no. XIX/XXV.
Signed, numbered, and dated in pencil.
Measurements: 68.5 x 97.5 cm.

The work belongs to Jorge Castillo’s mature period, the year he presented *Recent Works* at the Leandro Navarro Gallery in Madrid. The composition unfolds one of his characteristic universes rooted in the fantastic: human figures, animals, and hybrid creatures intertwine in a space governed by dreamlike logic, where meticulous drawing coexists with broad swaths of color. This combination of figuration, metamorphosis, and estrangement ties into the artist’s personal brand of magical realism and the surrealist resonances that run through much of his career.

Hand-applied color takes on special importance here, as it introduces color directly onto the print and contrasts intense areas of blue, yellow, green, and red with the linear dominance of the drawing. This intervention endows the print with a unique pictorial dimension within the edition, particularly well-suited to a large-format graphic work.

Jorge Castillo is one of the most internationally renowned Spanish artists of his generation, with a career spanning Spain, France, Germany, and the United States. Selected for the São Paulo Biennial in 1960, he settled in New York in the 1980s and was represented by the Marlborough Gallery; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum acquired works by him, and in 1990 the Meadows Museum in Dallas dedicated a major exhibition to him. His work is also included in collections such as the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
