DESCRIPTION
ALEXANDER CALDER (Lawnton, Pennsylvania, 1898 – New York, 1976).
“Sala Gaspar,” 1973.
Color lithograph on paper, H.C. edition.
Signed and inscribed in pencil.
Measurements: 65.5 x 50.5 cm.
Produced for the exhibition that Sala Gaspar dedicated to Calder in Barcelona in 1973, this lithograph encapsulates some of the essential elements of his artistic language. Large circular forms in red, blue, and yellow are distributed across the white background, while the inscription “Sala Gaspar,” rendered in black calligraphy with sweeping curves, is fully integrated into the composition.
Printmaking played an important role in Calder’s career, allowing him to translate his explorations of color, form, and balance into the two-dimensional plane. Here, the intensity of the primary colors and the spontaneity of the line create an image of great visual immediacy, closely linked to his sculptural vocabulary.
Alexander Calder was one of the leading figures in 20th-century sculpture and one of the great innovators of modern abstraction. As the creator of mobiles and stabiles, he enjoyed a career of wide international renown. The MoMA in New York dedicated a major solo exhibition to him in 1943, and the Guggenheim Museum held a major retrospective in 1964. His work is represented in major international museum collections.
