DESCRIPTION
Based on works by GUSTAVE DORÉ (Strasbourg, 1832–Paris, 1883).
“Hunting Scenes.”
Chromolithographs.
Measurements: 42 x 62 cm (x4); 83.5 x 102.5 cm (frames, x4).
This set brings together four hunting and adventure scenes inspired by the visual world of Gustave Doré, one of the great European illustrators of the 19th century, renowned for the narrative power of his compositions and his extraordinary ability to recreate exotic settings and highly dramatic situations.
The prints depict hunting scenes in various natural settings, ranging from tropical landscapes featuring confrontations between hunters and big cats to scenes featuring wild animals in forested areas and cold-climate regions. The abundance of detail, the dynamism of the figures, and the hallmarks of contrast between the characters and nature evoke the nineteenth-century passion for travel, exploration, and adventure. Gustave Doré explored the theme of hunting in various works created in the mid-nineteenth century. Notable among these are *Chasseurs d’ours*, published in the *Musée français-anglais* series between 1856 and 1857, as well as *Chasse au Condor*, dated 1862.
