Plate with a fossil fish specimen belonging to the Eocene and coming from Monte Bolca in Verona, Italy. The fossil remains of fish can correspond to complete specimens, as is the case of the one we present here, or to isolated remains such as scales, teeth, otoliths, etc. The first fossil fish remains appear in sediments from the Upper Cambrian or Lower Ordovician. Until the Silurian, agnathids (fish without jaws) predominated, but from this period on, the diversity of gnastostomates (with articulated jaws) will increase.
The deposits of Monte Bolca (Verona) are one of the most important fossil fish deposits in the world. All the fossils have an official registration number because, for many years, these sites have been highly protected by the Italian government. For this reason, it is very difficult to get these fossils on the market.
