BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ANTONIO ROSSELLINO (Settignano, Italy, 1427 - Florence, 1479).
"Madonna and Child.
Wood, stucco and pigments.
Measurements: 83,5 x 52 x 11 cm.
A prolific Renaissance artist, Antonio Rossellino belonged to the same generation as Mino da Fiesole and Desiderio de Settignano. It is likely that he completed his apprenticeship with Donatello. Among his most notable works are: the funerary monument of Blessed Marcolino (1458) in the church of the black monks in Forli; the tomb of Cardinal Jacopo of Portugal in San Miniato al Monte, Florence (1461-1467), The bust portrait of Matteo Palmieri (Museo del Bargello) is dated and signed in 1468. Together with Mino da Fiesole he worked on the reliefs of the Assumption of the Virgin and the Martyrdom of Saint Stephen in the pulpit of Prato Cathedral. A bust of the Infant Baptist (Pinacoteca di Faenza) and an Infant Jesus (Musée du Louvre) are attributed to him by some experts. His style is purely Renaissance, with a virtuoso treatment of the figures, graceful poses and elegant smiles.
