BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Italian school; XVII century.
"Holy Family".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements; 136 x 102 cm.
This oil on canvas, belonging to the Italian School of the seventeenth century, represents a scene of the Holy Family in an atmosphere of intimacy and seclusion. The composition takes place in a somber space, where the dim lighting and chiaroscuro highlight the figures, giving them a spiritual and emotional dimension.
In the center, the Virgin Mary, dressed in a red and blue mantle, holds the Child Jesus with delicacy, while he extends his arm in the direction of St. Joseph, who presents him with a cross. The scene evokes the foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice, establishing a visual dialogue between the present and the future redeemer of humanity. The empty cradle and the white cloths reinforce this premonition, symbolizing both the birth and destiny of Christ.
The pictorial treatment responds to baroque ideals, with a marked expressiveness in the faces and a richness in the representation of fabrics and volumes. The fluid brushstrokes and the modeling of the figures reveal the technical quality of the Italian school, influenced by Caravaggio's mastery in the use of tenebrism and theatricality.
The theme of the Holy Family was recurrent in Baroque art, as it transmitted devotional values and reinforced Christian iconography in a period of strong spirituality. The refined execution of this work and its ability to move the viewer make it an eloquent testimony of the quality and sensitivity of 17th century Italian painting.
