BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish school; second third of the seventeenth century.
"Child with St. John.
Oil on copper.
It has frame of the nineteenth century.
Measurements: 23 x 17 cm; 33,5 x 28 cm (frame).
This painting on copper belonging to the Flemish School of the second third of the XVII century, represents the Infant Jesus with St. John child, kneeling and kissing one of the feet of his cousin, is a work of great technical refinement and deep symbolic load. This composition, set in a landscape of clear naturalistic inspiration and framed by a border of meticulously arranged flowers, eloquently reflects the essential characteristics of Flemish painting of this period: virtuosity in detail, devotional sensitivity and a harmonious synthesis between the human and the divine.
The copper support, often used by Flemish artists to achieve smooth surfaces and a high chromatic saturation, allows here a finish of extraordinary thoroughness.
In the center of the composition, the humble gesture of St. John as a child, kneeling before the infant Christ and kissing his foot, acquires a profound theological resonance. It is not merely a tender or affectionate scene, but a prefiguration of the recognition of the divinity of Jesus and the role of St. John as his precursor. This motif, recurrent in Counter-Reformation art, communicates to the viewer the idea of submission and adoration from the earliest childhood, serving as a model of Christian virtue and reverence.
