BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Dutch school; early 18th century.
"Portrait of a lady".
Oil on panel.

It has a frame from the early twentieth century.
Measurements: 38 x 32 cm; 49,5 x 44 cm (frame).
Before us is a pictorial work of the Dutch school of the early eighteenth century, an artistic tradition widely recognized for its technical mastery, his keen observation of the natural and domestic world, and its exquisite treatment of light and textures. The scene takes place in an architectural setting delimited by two columns framing a stone balcony, crowned at the top by a heavy ochre-colored drapery, whose rich undulations of fabric add depth and theatricality to the composition.
From this balcony, a lady looks out and immediately captures the viewer's attention. Her figure, elegantly dressed in a blue robe with a plunging neckline that partially reveals one of her breasts, naturally balances the classicism of the setting with a subtle sensuality that is more suggestive than explicit. The woman, whose posture seems suspended between action and contemplation, extends her hand to take a fish from a platter placed on the windowsill. Next to her, a tray with bread and turnips adds a symbolic, everyday component, anchoring the scene in domestic life and underscoring the attention to detail characteristic of Dutch genre painting.
A delicate flowering vine climbs up the side of the balcony, lending an organic touch to the scene and softening the rigid architectural geometry. This vegetal inclusion not only acts as a compositional device to guide the viewer's gaze, but also reveals the painter's skill in reproducing with botanical accuracy.
From a technical point of view, the work is a testimony to the skill of the Dutch School. The quality of the chiaroscuro, the nuanced treatment of the surfaces, especially in the wet transparency of the fish, the satin sheen of the dress, and the volume of the rustic bread, demonstrate an exceptional pictorial sensitivity. The use of light, which seems to filter from an invisible lateral point, gently bathes the skin of the female figure and models her anatomy with verisimilitude, reinforcing her three-dimensional presence without falling into excessive baroque theatricality.
This type of painting, situated between the allegorical and the everyday, reveals not only the individual talent of the artist, but also the visual values of a bourgeois culture that valued meticulous observation, domesticity elevated to art, and a subtle eroticism contained in scenes of apparent simplicity.
