BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Possibly FRANCISCO MENESES OSORIO (Seville, c. 1640 - 1721); BARTOLOMÉ ESTEBAN MURILLO's workshop.
"St. Nicholas of Bari."
Oil on canvas. Relined in the 19th century.
Measurements: 108 x 84 cm; 117 x 92 cm (frame).
There are many miracles attributed to San Nicolás, and this canvas alludes specifically to one of them: the resurrection of three children who had been sacrificed to feed the customers of an innkeeper. Stylistically the work follows the models of Francisco Meneses de Osorio, as can be seen by comparing it with the painting of the same theme that is the house Museum of Murillo, painted in 1692, or in the chapel of the Hospital del Pozo Santo. Saint Nicholas, also known as Saint Nicholas of Myra in the East, or Saint Nicholas of Bari in the West, was a bishop of the 4th century. He was born in Patara, in the region of Lycia (now within the territory of Turkey), into a wealthy Christian family, and as a child he stood out for his pious and generous character. After the death of his parents, Nicholas inherited a large fortune, which he put at the service of the needy. He then went to live in Myra, in Anatolia, where he was consecrated bishop. He was imprisoned by Emperor Licinius, and later freed by Constantine, and participated in the Council of Nicaea. An outstanding orator, he was always a defender of the weak against the powerful, a task in which, despite his advanced age, he acted with courage and vigor.
Osorio was born in Seville, and it is believed that he died there. Very little is known of his life. He was a pupil and imitator of Murillo, and it has been suggested that some of the works attributed to the latter were painted by Osorio. We know that Murillo considered him his friend, that he was a close acquaintance of Juan Garzón, with whom he worked; that at one time he was secretary and then president of the Seville Academy, and that while in that city he had a high reputation. It is said that this reputation was discarded after his death, because it was felt that some of his copies of Murillo's works were so accurate that he should have signed the master's name. In fact, it was suggested that two of his copies had been accepted as genuine works by Murillo. On the other hand, these statements are stated by a Spanish author to have been made solely for the purpose of discrediting Osorio. It is said that he and Murillo worked together in the Capuchin church in Cadiz. His main work was painted for the church of San Martin in Madrid, and depicts the prophet Elijah. There are pictures of him in the museums of Cadiz and Seville, the latter related to the Order of St. Francis. It is said that a work depicting St. Catherine, which is preserved in Cadiz, had a special devotion to St. Philip Neri and was buried in the church dedicated to that saint.
