The image represents the story of "Vertumnus and Pomona", a theme based on Roman mythology, especially in Ovid's Metamorphoses. In this painting the author, inspired by the work of Theodorus Netscher, shows Vertumnus, the Roman god of seasons and change, disguised as an old woman, trying to woo Pomona, the goddess of fruits and gardens. Vertumnus, who could transform himself into various forms, used this old woman's disguise to approach the reclusive Pomona and convince her of his love. The scene symbolizes seduction and transformation, as well as the connection between nature and love. This scene has been depicted by numerous artists throughout history, especially in the Baroque period.
The painting expresses the gallant grace and refinement typical of the late Baroque period in transition to the Rococo, of which Theodorus Netscher was a representative. Stylistically, the painting shows a clear influence of the French courtly taste, filtered by the Flemish sensibility: it is perceived in the delicacy of the faces, the satin treatment of the fabrics, and the careful scenographic disposition of the scene. The figures (represented with soft flesh tones, idealized gestures and sensual postures) are set in a bucolic environment that acts as a backdrop for the love fable taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
