The costumbrismo in the English painting of the 19th century was characterized by the representation of scenes of daily life, capturing in detail the customs, clothing and activities of the different social classes. This genre played an important role in documenting the social changes of Victorian England, marked by the Industrial Revolution and urbanization. Costumbrist painters sought a balance between realistic observation and moralizing narrative, depicting both disappearing rural life and new urban settings. These works not only had aesthetic value, but also functioned as social commentary, reflecting concerns about national identity, traditions, and the tensions of a changing society.
