DESCRIPTION

DIEGO DE SILVA (Active from 1630- 1690),
"The Baptism of Christ".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Signed in
Measurements. 71,5 x 51,5 cm.
In this work the author represents a fundamental biblical passage in the cycle of Christ's life: his baptism in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist. This scene, loaded with theological symbolism, becomes an opportunity for the artist to display both his religious sensitivity and his compositional mastery within the context of Spanish Baroque devotional painting.
The composition shows Christ kneeling, half-naked, with his hands together in an attitude of prayer, receiving the sacrament from the hands of St. John the Baptist, who stands to his right, pouring water with a shell over his head. John's gesture is solemn and restrained, reinforced by his elongated and ascetic figure, dressed in skins, symbol of his eremitical life. Both characters are represented in a fluvial landscape, with austere vegetation and an open sky, where the divine presence is manifested.
From above, a white dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit, descends in a halo of celestial light. Around it, three winged cherub heads intensify the sacredness of the moment.
The painting shows a modest but sincere technique, typical of an artist trained in a local rather than a courtly environment, with traditional compositional resources. The drawing is correct although not particularly refined, and the proportions, although somewhat rigid, transmit the spirituality of the subject effectively. The chromatic palette is earthy and restrained, with soft hallmarks of light that do not reach the extremes of Tenebrist chiaroscuro, but suggest an indirect influence of Baroque naturalism. The figure of Christ is treated with delicacy, highlighting the anatomical attention and the treatment of the skin, while St. John the Baptist appears with a coarser and more expressive modeling, highlighting his prophetic and ascetic character.
