DESCRIPTION

School of JOSÉ DE RIBERA (Xátiva, Valencia, 1591 - Naples, 1652).
"Santiago apostle".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 67 x 51 cm; 81 x 66 cm (frame).
The work presented here is coherently ascribed to the school of José de Ribera, one of the greatest exponents of the tenebrist naturalism of the seventeenth century and a key figure in the spread of the Caravaggist language in the Neapolitan area. The painting shares the stylistic traits that defined the master's artistic environment: an intense conception of the human figure, a dramatic use of light and a desire to penetrate the psychological and spiritual dimension of the character depicted.
From the formal point of view, the apostle appears cut out against a dark and undefined background, a characteristic resource of riparian tenebrism, which concentrates all the attention on the face and hands. The lateral illumination strongly affects the physiognomy, emphasizing the bony anatomy, the wrinkles and the beard, treated with severe realism and without idealization. This naturalistic approach, almost austere, connects directly with Ribera's poetics.
The iconography of Santiago is built from essential and easily recognizable elements, such as the pilgrim's shell, integrated with sobriety in the composition. The restrained gesture, the direct gaze and the firm pose give the figure an almost sculptural presence, reinforcing the idea of apostolic authority.
In comparative terms, this work finds clear parallels with autograph paintings by Ribera preserved in important museum collections. It can be related, for example, with the apostles and philosophers of the Prado Museum, such as St. Andrew or St. Bartholomew, where the master develops isolated, monumental figures, illuminated by a spotlight that emerges from the darkness. Likewise, it has affinities with works preserved in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, especially in the way of modeling the faces through strong hallmarks of light and in the expressive intensity achieved through a reduced palette of earths, ochers and deep blacks.
