DESCRIPTION
Spanish School; XVII century.
"Saint Clare and Saint Francis".
Illuminated engraving on paper.
It has frame of the XIX century:
Measurements; 8.5 x 14 cm, 29 x 36 cm (frame).
The composition of this engraving brings together Saint Clare of Assisi and Saint Francis in an attitude of adoration before the Child, the theological and visual axis of the scene. The identification is reinforced by the Franciscan habit, the collected gestures and the presence of symbolic attributes, the humility of the manger, the supernatural light that radiates from the Child, common resources in Baroque painting.
The work reveals affinities with the moderate naturalism typical of the Spanish sixteenth century: expressive faces, broad folds and a balanced composition that favors narrative clarity over the gimmick. The schematic landscape and neutral background focus attention on the sacred scene, while the economy of means reinforces its devotional efficacy.
