The Immaculate Conception here reviewed is part of the Marian iconographic tradition deeply rooted in Spanish painting, although it reflects the aesthetic and spiritual changes of the transition from late Baroque to Neoclassicism. At the end of the 18th century, the representation of the Immaculate retains its strong devotional charge, still driven by popular religiosity and institutional support, but adopts a more serene, refined and rational language, in accordance with the new enlightened taste.
The figure of the Virgin appears conceived with an ideal of contained and balanced beauty: the face is youthful, with a sweet and collected expression, far from the intense pathos of the full baroque. The body is organized by means of a stable and harmonious composition, with a soft counterpoint that confers elegance without dramatism. The ascending arrangement, traditional in this iconography, is preserved, although resolved with greater geometric clarity and less enveloping dynamism.
From the technical point of view, the work shows a more controlled and smooth brushstroke, with a predominance of the drawing over the material effect. The chromatic range is notably clarified: the blues and whites of the mantle and tunic are luminous, clean and orderly, underlining the doctrinal purity of Mary as tota pulchra. The light is homogeneous and enveloping, without the strong tenebrist hallmarks of the previous century, contributing to an atmosphere of serenity and spiritual elevation.
