DESCRIPTION
Novo-Hispanic school; late eighteenth century.
"Virgin of Guadalupe".
Oil on tin plate.
It has a XIX century frame with faults.
Measurements: 39 x 26 cm; 40 x 34 cm (frame).
This Virgin of Guadalupe responds to the consolidated iconographic models of the cult of Guadalupe, widely spread in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The painting, made in oil on tin plate, usual support in works of domestic devotion.
The image maintains the essential features of the Guadalupan archetype, the frontal figure of the Virgin, the starry mantle and the luminous mandorla, emphasizing its symbolic and devotional dimension. The style reflects a late baroque language with a tendency to formal simplification, typical of the serialized production of the end of the 18th century, destined to a wide diffusion of the cult and the affirmation of the novo-Hispanic religious identity.
