Devotional image of the Virgin in her invocation of Dolorosa, inscribed in the Roman late Baroque tradition and based on the idealized models of Carlo Dolci, Florentine master famous for the sweetening of the features and the contained intensity of the religious emotion. The work stands out for the softness of the face, the velvety treatment of the flesh tones and a deep and emphatic chromatic range, which reinforces its meditative character.
These qualities refer directly to the pictorial language of Bartolomeo Mancini, to whom a very close composition is attributed - the well-known Madonna Addolorata preserved in the Museo di Casa Martelli in Florence -, with notable formal affinity to the present painting, although in a different format.
