DESCRIPTION
School of CARLO MARATTA (Camerano, 1625- Rome, 1713), XVIII century.
"Immaculate with Child".
Oil on canvas.
Very popular model of Carlo Maratta.
Measurements: 61 x 48,5 cm; 83,5 x 71 cm.
This painting of the school of Carlo Maratta develops a Marian image of triumphal character, in which the iconography of the Immaculate Conception and the active victory over evil converge.
A singular aspect of the composition is the shared action between the Virgin and the Child: both participate in the gesture of wounding the serpent by means of a spear culminating in a cross. This detail introduces a dynamic reading of the Redemption, where the Marian purity and the sacrifice of Christ act together, reinforcing the militant character of faith.
The wide draperies unfold with an ascending impulse, building a diagonal and light composition. The golden light envelops the flesh tones and fabrics with softness, while the palette dominated by intense blues and warm touches preludes the decorative taste of the 18th century.
Works by the master are kept in outstanding private collections around the world, as well as in institutions such as the Prado Museum in Madrid, the National Gallery in London, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the Getty Museum, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Belgium, etc.
