DESCRIPTION
Andalusian master of the second third of the 18th century.
"Infant Jesus as Salvator Mundi and the Holy Parentage".
Oil on original canvas.
Andalusian frame circa 1760.
Measurements: 69 x 95 cm; 102 x 116 cm (frame).
This devotional composition is fully inscribed in the production of the Andalusian school of the Baroque, characterized by an intense spiritual charge, a marked naturalism and a careful narrative organization at the service of devotion. The scene brings together the Sacred Parentage (medieval Christian iconographic representation showing the extended family of Jesus, centered on Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary) together with the Child Jesus as Salvator Mundi, in a complex but balanced arrangement, conceived to guide the gaze of the faithful from the earthly plane towards the celestial sphere.
From the stylistic point of view, the work presents features typical of the Sevillian naturalism inherited from Murillo, especially in the idealized faces, the sweetness of the expressions and the warm treatment of the flesh tones. The use of a palette dominated by ochers, earths and deep golden tones contributes to create an enveloping atmosphere, while the hallmarks of light direct the attention towards the main figures, highlighting them from the dark and vaporous background.
The composition, rich in symbols but clearly readable, responds to the catechetical needs of the time, integrating emotion, doctrine and visual beauty. Overall, this Infant Jesus as Salvator Mundi and the Holy Parentage is a significant example of Sevillian religious painting of the last third of the seventeenth century, both for its formal quality and its devotional effectiveness, also retaining a remarkable interest for being presented in a period frame, an element that reinforces its historical integrity and its heritage value.
