BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish or Italian school; XVIII century.
"Virgin and Child".
Oil on canvas.
Presents restorations.
Measurements: 99 x 75 cm; 106 x 82 cm (frame).
The composition is articulated around the figure of the Virgin, represented in half body, holding the Child Jesus on her lap. The pyramidal scheme, of Renaissance roots, confers stability and harmony to the whole, while the gentle inclination of Mary's head introduces a delicate movement that humanizes the scene. The Child, naked and lively, breaks the static serenity by raising his right arm in an ascending gesture, traditionally interpreted as an announcement of his redemptive destiny or as a sign of blessing, establishing a symbolic axis that connects the earthly scene with the divine.
The treatment of color and light reinforces this reading. The palette, dominated by warm and deep tones, refers to both the Italian and Spanish traditions, where chiaroscuro continues to play an essential role in the construction of volume and atmosphere. The neutral and somber background isolates the figures from the space, concentrating the viewer's attention on the mother-child relationship and favoring a contemplative experience, in keeping with the devotional function of the work.
From the formal point of view, the soft modeling of the faces, the delicacy of the flesh tones and the care in the folds of the drapery are evidence of a solid technique, although contained, typical of workshops or masters who assimilate great models without seeking grandiloquence. The face of the Virgin, serene and melancholic, transmits an introspective spirituality, while the infantile corporeality of the Child introduces a note of naturalism that brings the sacred closer to the human, one of the distinctive features of the religiosity of the 18th century.
