DESCRIPTION

Spanish or Novo-Hispanic school; XVIII- XIX century.
"Saint Teresa of Avila as Doctor of the Church".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 79 x 61 cm; 84,5 x 65,5 cm (frame).
This painting of Saint Teresa of Avila as Doctor of the Church, made between the XVIII and XIX centuries and ascribable to the Spanish or Novo-Hispanic school, is part of the late Baroque devotional tradition that prolongs, with its own nuances, the iconographic models consecrated in the Modern Age. The work presents the Carmelite saint as a figure of spiritual and intellectual authority, emphasizing her condition of Doctor of the Church through a clear and deeply symbolic visual language.
The composition is frontal and markedly symmetrical, with the figure of St. Teresa occupying almost the entire pictorial space. Her face, serene and restrained expression, establishes a direct relationship with the viewer, reinforced by the slight inclination of the head and the softness of the gesture. The golden halo surrounding her figure not only signals her holiness, but also acts as a compositional device to separate her from the dark background and focus attention on her presence. In her left hand she holds an architectural model, a direct allusion to the foundation and reform of the Carmelite convents, while in her right hand she carries a banner, symbol of the active defense of faith and doctrine. These attributes turn the image into a visual synthesis of her double condition of mystic and reformer.
The work reveals a solid and careful quality, although without aspiring to the virtuosity of the great courtly baroque. The drawing is firm and legible, especially in the treatment of the face and hands, which concentrate the greatest expressive charge. The folds of the Carmelite habit are resolved with a soft and orderly modeling, and the chromatic palette is based on clear hallmarks between the white of the headdress, the brown of the habit and the vivid accents of the red banner and the architectural elements. This use of color, more descriptive than atmospheric, reinforces the iconographic clarity and pedagogical function of the image.
Compared to earlier baroque representations of Saint Teresa, marked by ecstasy, intense emotion and compositional dynamism, this painting leans towards a more restrained and doctrinal interpretation. The saint does not appear rapt by the mystical experience, but affirmed in her role of intellectual and foundational authority, which responds to a sensibility typical of the late eighteenth century and the transition to the nineteenth century.
